My approach blends feminist counselling ethics with Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy techniques and creative arts therapy interventions. You do not need to be an artist to benefit from creative techniques; at times this might just mean that we speak about your experiences with metaphor and word-pictures in a way that helps to clarify what you are going through.
I aim to meet your specific goals as efficiently as possible. Each client is unique, and though I rely on evidenced-based practices, it is my experience that each person’s healing work is specific and unique to them.
o Establishing a sense of emotional safety and trust as a crucial first step
o Care not to re-traumatize the client through unnecessary re-telling of the trauma narrative
o A deep respect for nervous systems function. I meet will you where you are at and we will work from there.
o Providing you with autonomy and choice throughout our work together
o Deep listening and a desire to hear and understand the uniqueness of your experience
o Normalizing the trauma response; in trauma therapy we often say that trauma reactions are the mind-body’s normal way of responding to abnormal events. “Abnormal” is outside of you, not within you. You are responding naturally, the way you are supposed to when life events and circumstance become overwhelming. We will work together to normalize this experience and help you to regain a sense of control.
o Use of creativity, metaphor and image to move your through trauma processing
o A deep respect for the range of health and wellness practices across cultural traditions
o A deep respect for the ways in which social circumstances affect and can create distress
o A belief in the inner resources you already have to help support you in moving towards wellness
o A belief that life’s most excruciating crises can bring amazing and unexpected gifts
o A deep sense of gratitude in being able to walk beside and support people through some of their most challenging life experiences
